Cougars (or mountain lions or pumas as they are sometimes known) are magnificent wild creatures. They were hunted to extinction in most of North America but now they are protected and their numbers are on the rise. The cougar is a top predator whose role in nature is to remove sick, injured or weak prey animals from the gene pool, thereby strengthening the survivors.

Though cougars are normally shy and tend to avoid humans, their wild habitat has shrunk so much that meetings between the two species are inevitable. When a cougar mistakes a human being for a prey animal, serious injury or death can occur. Though these attacks are on the rise, wholesale extermination of this beautiful cat is not the answer.

Like all predators, cougars are always looking for the easiest available meal, therefore they are unlikely to attack an animal that can elude, or worse, injure them since a serious injury spells death for a hunter in the wild. Cougars try to attack their prey stealthily since a quick surprise kill is a safer kill. If a prey animal is alert and looking right at a predator, the predator is less likely to attack for fear of being bitten or kicked or gored. Most cougar attacks on humans have been surprise attacks from the rear. The big cats tend to go for the back or side of the neck.
In the Sundarbans, a coastal region of eastern India, man-eating tigers had been attacking and killing fishermen for years. In 1986, the Indian government issued masks to the local fishermen with instructions to wear them on the backs of their heads. The attacks dropped dramatically. In the first year only one mask wearer was attacked while thirty non-mask wearers were killed and eaten. One mask wearer reported being followed by a tiger for miles but he was never attacked. The tigers were fooled into thinking that the fishermen were looking at them. That little trick saved many lives!

We manufacture patches and decals of large, scary eyes with highly visible flourescent eyeballs. If the decals are placed on the back of a bike helmet or a hat, a cougar, thinking that he is being observed, might decide to seek less alert prey. This simple deception could save your life or the life of your child. Why take chances?
